Diwali is Just Around the Corner… How is it celebrated?

It’s that time of year again where Diwali is just around the corner! Can you believe how fast that year has gone..?

Diwali, an ancient Indian festival is celebrated in the UK in autumn and normally falls towards the end of October. But why is Diwali celebrated? Well it’s the celebration of light over dark, good over evil.

 How is Diwali Celebrated?

Families will begin their Diwali celebration by ensuring their homes and work place is cleaned and decorated. Then on the evening of Diwali new clothes or best outfits are worn by all, the house, inside and out is decorated with candles and lamp. This part of the celebration is called ‘light up’ and diyas are traditionally used! Families will pray, normally to Lakshmi, the goddess of fertility and prosperity. This part of Diwali is called puja and after puja fireworks follow. Families will then feast and exchange gifts between each other and close friends!

Here at Giraffe Boutique, we are super excited for Diwali this year as it’s GB's first… and we are wanting to show you how to celebrate this wonderful festival in style and with our top tips!

Top tips for Preparing for Diwali:

  1. Get your cleaning hat on…just before the festival starts people will clean their homes and sometimes workplace, making sure everything is spotless and looking spic and span.
  2. Decorations are normally brought for the Diwali celebration and the house is decorated in preparation for the ‘light up’. See our range of Diwali decorations here!
  3. New clothes and shopping, shopping, shopping… (my favourite part of the Diwali preparation)! Whether it’s a whole new outfit from head to toe or a little bit of new jewellery, new items are quite often worn. Have you seen our collection of jewellery?
  4. Diyas, are oil based candles that are traditionally used throughout Diwali, as well as lanterns and other candles, allowing you to light up your house through and through!
  5. Exchanging gifts with close family and friends is often one of the hardest parts when it comes to the preparation of Diwali. Getting little gifts to show your love and appreciation to your family and friends for being in your life can take time and a lot of brain work. Take a look at our gift guides to see how we can help you find the perfect gifts for your loved ones this Diwali.

We are wishing you all a Diwali filled with love, hope, light and happiness!
